For most kids in the region, Tuesday's "snow day" was a perfect storm: A forecast bad enough to cancel classes, yet a dusting so mild they could spend their unexpected holiday at the mall or the multiplex. But at Bryn Mawr's Baldwin School, it was an ideal day to stay inside the house and read the Chinese philosopher Confucius or sit at the computer coding new apps.

Last week I wrote a bit about the life-changing power of one teacher to inspire hundreds of adults to get out and create and exhibit their work. We all have oil paints or pastels in a drawer somewhere, maybe it is the time to take them out and rekindle that creative flame? Sometimes it takes the community of an arts organization to give us that nudge to give creativity a try.

The winter storm that was anticipated to dump more than a foot of snow on the region didn't materialize and Eastern Pennsylvania, including Bucks and Montgomery counties as well as Philadelphia, was spared what had been dubbed on social media as #Snowmageddon2015. With snow still falling on the region as of Tuesday morning, snow totals in Lower Bucks County, Montgomery County and Philadelphia were expected to be between 3 and 4 inches.

Although New England appears to have been hit hard, a more easterly than predicted path of Monday's snowstorm appears to have spared Chester County, as snowfall counts amounted to less than an inch in some parts of the county. Although light snow was falling Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service is not predicting much in the way of additional accumulations and roads are generally in good condition, although there are still some icy patches and drivers should use caution, local authorities say.

Faced with the threat of the region being buried in snow from a nor'easter making its way up the coast, the governors of Pennsylvania and New Jersey declared emergencies, a major airline suspended all its flights in and out of Philadelphia, and NJ Transit announced it would halt all bus and train operations. All Philadelphia municipal offices will be closed Tuesday, as will city public and archdiocesan schools, Mayor Nutter said Monday at a late-night news conference at the city's emergency operations center.
