Georgia lands 5-star shooting guard Anthony Edwards

Sporting News — (Bob Hille)

Five-star prospect Anthony Edwards, the No. 2 player in the recruiting class of 2019, according to 247Sports' Composite Rankings, committed Monday morning to Georgia.

The nation's top-ranked shooting guard out of Atlanta, Edwards chose the in-state Bulldogs over SEC rival Kentucky and Florida State of the ACC.

He noted Georgia coach Tom Crean's relationship with two NBA stars as a factor in his decision.

"Two of my favorite players, Dwyane Wade and Victor Oladipo, were coached by Tom Crean," Edwards said after his livestreamed announcement on CBSSports.com. "He's a great coach with player development. When I went to a game (at Georgia), I felt the fans and the gym, everybody showing love, it felt like I was home."

Crean, in his first year at Georgia, coached Wade at Marquette and Oladipo at Indiana.

By landing Edwards, Georgia's 2019 recruiting class — which previously included two four-star commitments in Jaykwon Walton and Toumani Camara — leapfrogged from 39th in the country to 12th, according to 247Sports.

Edwards reclassified in November from the class of 2020 ahead of the season at Atlanta's Holy Spirit Academy, where he is averaging 26.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.1 steals a game and also shooting 38 percent from 3-point range.
