The Associated Press

MCDONOUGH, Ga. (AP) — The Latest on the shooting of a police officer southeast of Atlanta (all times local):

4 p.m.

Authorities say a single gunshot critically wounded a police officer and killed another man as the two struggled after the officer responded to a report of a disturbance at a dentist office southeast of Atlanta.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Natalie Ammons told reporters the staff at the business called 911 a little after 8 a.m. Thursday to report a man causing a disturbance.

Henry County police Officer Michael Smith responded and spoke to the man, identified as 53-year-old Dimaggio McNelly of McDonough. Ammons says McNelly became combative and the officer fired his stun gun multiple times but it had no effect.

Ammons said the shot was fired from the officer's gun as the two struggled after McNelly lunged at the officer.

Ammons said the staff at the dentist office didn't know McNelly and didn't know why he was there.
