Pointe Pals: Friends Fields, Hoffman both celebrate birthday today

The Daily Independent, Ashland, Ky. — Lee Ward The Daily Independent, Ashland, Ky.

Feb. 14-- Feb. 14--RUSSELL -- If you're visiting Morning Pointe of Russell, you might see a couple of fellows who seem inseparable.

Likely one is pushing the other's wheelchair.

They are Jim Fields, 88, and Sam Hoffman, 86, residents who met at the assisted living facility and found they had a great deal in common.

Hoffman, a Russell native, lost his wife to Alzheimer's Disease. Fields' wife was in another facility because of Alzheimer's.

"Since his wife has Alzheimer's, I thought I could be of benefit to him," Hoffman said.

Fields said Hoffman was right about that.

"He's been excellent," Fields said. "He really helped me."

Hoffman retired from Armco Steel after 38 years. "I did everything, but I ended up as a supervisor," he said.

His wife was a stay-at-home mother to their four children.

Fields, who was born in Clendenin, West Virginia, worked for Columbia Gas. The father of two eventually became a construction supervisor and hired his wife to take over his pipeline-building job. He also served in the U.S. Army infantry during the Korean War and was stationed at Outpost Harry during a famous 1953 attack.

The two agree their favorite activity at Morning Pointe is eating -- while the food is said to be delicious, they both look forward to ice cream. And bingo.

"You get bingo cash when you participate," Fields said. "At the end of the month, they have a bingo store where you can spend it."

They also read the newspaper and watch ball games. Fields said he especially likes basketball and Hoffman said he is a UK fan.

The two even share a birthday -- today -- and look forward to a birthday party with others born in February who live in their community. They'll be 89 and 87, respectively.

"These two are one of a kind," Katie Smith, life enrichment director, said. "If we can't find one, we go to the other's room and they'll be watching a game or chatting."

They agree they are buddies.

"We get along all right," Fields said. "I just do what he tells me to do."
