April 07--Apr. 7--The Kansas State men's and women's track teams won three events and earned three NCAA top-10 performances at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Arizona, on Saturday.
In the men's high jump competition, last year's NCAA outdoor champion, Tejaswin Shankar, recorded a pair of misses at 2.15m/7-00.50 before clearing the bar on his last attempt, which ultimately helped him win the event.
Shankar then cleared 2.20m/7-02.50 and 2.25m/7-04.50 on his second attempt. It's the second-best mark of his collegiate outdoor career and ranks second in the NCAA this season.
On the track in the women's premiere 800-meter race, freshman Kassidy Johnson ran the third-fastest time in K-State outdoor history, finishing in 2:04.45 to place third. That mark would have ranked fifth in the NCAA entering the weekend.
Making her season debut in the women's 400-meter hurdles, senior Ranae McKenzie looked to pick up where she left off last season, when she placed fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She ran the sixth-fastest time in the country by clocking a 57.58 to win the event.
Freshman Antoni Hoyte-Small and junior Justin Davis each set personal bests in the men's 400 meters. Hoyte-Small ran a 46.92 to place third and Davis finished sixth in 47.53.
Between the men's long jump and 100 meters, senior Tom Pyle recorded two personal-best performances on Saturday. He ran a 10.87 to finish 11th in the 100-meter event, then jumped a personal-best 7.42m/24-04.25 in the long jump.
The Wildcats closed out the Sun Angel Classic with the men's and women's 4x400 meter relay, where the K-State women's team of McKenzie, Lauren Taubert, Lavaun Stephenson and Ferguson finished third overall in 3:40.09. The K-State men's team of Davis, Hoyte-Small, Nick Albus and Kurt Loevenstein followed by placing fourth with a season-best time of 3:11.98.
K-State will split for the Triton Invitational in San Diego from April 11 to 13.
